A while ago my current provider announced they would be ceasing operation shortly and no further hosting will be possible after the end of the rental period, so I’m currently testing some other options. I thought I would give a try and check some Virtual Private Servers offers (thus upgrading from the shared hosting world). Looking for some budget, unmanaged VPS in Europe, I chose CheapVPS (indeed not much to choose from around $10/month). Well, I would say, at least for now I’m “sufficiently satisfied”, though not without some glitches on the way. It’s still too early to post any reviews, but I had some issues which gave me a bit of material to write about, so stay tuned.

Problem:
Having set up an AWS account lately (using S3 storage) I wanted to access my buckets through the means of a custom CNAME resolution (like virtual hosting mybucket.example.com rather than ugly s3.amazonaws.com address). Everything is explained in a straightforward manner at the Amazon’s Developer Guide, but it’s based on the US version, so I had to look for the appropriate hostname of the European grid.
Solution:
In fact I thought it would be more obvious to find, but, after all, I found the comment on the CarltonBale.com blog very useful.
The hostname used in the CNAME entry for EU buckets is to be set as: s3-external-3.amazonaws.com.
